Helping Children Orphaned by AIDS Calls This Penn Medicine Family to Action

Caring for the orphans of the AIDS pandemic is one of the greatest challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa today. South Africa alone, with a total population of 50 million, is home to nearly 4 million orphans, about 20% of the nation’s children.

One Penn Medicine family is rallying support for thousands of South African children and their communities through Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity (NOAH).

On Dec. 15, AIDS researchers and the Ultrasounds, Penn Medicine’s a cappella group, joined the Mackays to raise awareness for the issue. Beatrice Hahn, MD, described current insights into the origin and spread of AIDS. Bette Korber, PhD, spoke on recent progress in developing a vaccine. The Ultrasounds honored South Africa’s world famous a cappella tradition, performing “Siyahamba”, a South African hymn.

We’re a hit at MLK Day of Service!

March 6th, 2011

Earlier this semester, the Ultrasounds came in on a holiday (yes, the medical students actually had a day off!) to share music with the kids at a nearby elementary school. A week later, we received their heartfelt thanks:

Dear University of Pennsylvania Medical School Ultrasounds:

We would like to thank you for being a part of our 10th annual Martin
Luther King Day of Service.  With over 300 participants, this year was
our largest celebration.  Without your willingness, talent, and
support, it would have been impossible to make such well-deserving
children so extremely happy. Whether it was learning a song from you
or simply sharing the joy of music, the attention and care you showed
our students was more than we could have hoped for.

Thank you again for making our day special and our community a happier
and more hopeful place to live.

Sincerely,

Penrose Elementary

Singing for patients at CHOP!

March 6th, 2011

While doing a Musicians On Call event at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the Ultrasounds met a family who were kind enough to record our visit on video! Here is a performance of “Change In My Life” (which you can also movie see in our concert). How cute are those little girls? =)
